FAST III Trial Supports CAAS vFFR as an Alternative to Invasive FFR
The FAST III trial shows shorter procedure times and fewer complications, with comparable clinical safety.
To decide whether a narrowing in a coronary artery requires treatment, cardiologists in the catheterization lab rely on functional measurement using FFR, until now typically performed with a pressure wire. The FAST III trial now shows that the wire-free method CAAS vFFR results in a similar rate of major cardiac events as invasive pressure wire measurement.[1]
More than 2,200 patients across 37 centers in seven European countries took part in the randomized, prospective trial.[1] The result: nearly identical rates of major cardiac events in both groups, alongside shorter procedure times and fewer complications in the vFFR group.
At 55.8 versus 60.9 minutes, procedure times were shorter in the vFFR group, alongside fewer intraprocedural complications (3.7 percent versus 6.0 percent).[1] The results provide a scientific basis for wider clinical adoption of the method.
